Alkaline Diet To Battle Cancer? Doctors say No, But Try Antioxidants

Recently, a controversy has developed over antioxidants and alkaline fruits and their effects on cancer. Specifically, some believe that cancer can be treated by consuming alkaline fruits and vegetables.

Many web merchants claim that an alkaline body may be able to significantly fight the pH of malignant cancer cells until they die. According to doctors, the claims of such merchants are false. Doctors from the Mayo Clinic, one of the worlds most renowned medical treatment and diagnostic centers, say this cancer rumor is untrue.

According to the Mayo Clinic, A diet rich in certain alkaline foods, meaning foods that arent acidic, wont cure cancer. Proponents of this diet claim foods such as soft drinks and meats make your body acidic, allowing cancer to flourish (2005). Unfortunately, cancer, like many other serious illnesses, isn't that simple.

The Mayo Clinic elaborated about proponents of an anti-acid and anti-cancer diet stating, The theory that acid causes cancer isn't true, and it isnt clear that what you eat has any impact on your bodys overall acidity or alkalinity.

Free radicals have also been linked to cancerous cell growth. Many doctors confirm this fact. Free radicals have long been known to be mutagenic, stated Dr. Tamer Fouhad (2002). Animal and cell culture studies have suggested that antioxidants may slow or even prevent the development of cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Antioxidants are chemicals found in several food sources, like dark chocolate, green tea, red wine, vegetables, and fruits such as sour cherries, acai berries, blueberries, mangosteen, and the noni fruit. Examples of antioxidants include beta carotene, lycopene, vitamin A, vitamin E, and vitamin C. Not only do antioxidant vitamins benefit your body with health benefits; they may also combat cancer according to reputable medical sources.

But, the American Cancer Society thinks more research is needed on the subject. They point out that different studies have had mixed results. Their official statement is that too little is known about how antioxidant supplements actually act against disease. They do not, however, refute the claim.

Antioxidants are thought to bind with free radicals and thereby protect cellular DNA from harm, since free radicals are highly reactive and mutations in DNA can lead to cancer if flawed cells reproduce in large numbers. But, until more research is done, the ACS thinks the jurys still out on antioxidants.

Even if it is too soon for some organizations to endorse the beneficial effects of antioxidants in cancer prevention, a substantial body of evidence indicates its success. Incorporating antioxidants into your diet with fruit juices from mangosteen, pineapple, blueberries, pomegranate, star fruit and many other fruits is certainly worth a try when it comes to cancer prevention.

While the myth of an alkaline diet helping to prevent cancer is unclear, antioxidants have been found to help prevent cancer in certain studies. A healthy diet should include fresh fruits. Even the American Cancer Society states that the best way to reduce your cancer risk is to have a healthy diet that includes five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, so choose fruits rich in antioxidants to help tip the anti-cancer scales in your favor.

Diabetic Friendly Chocolate Sweetened with Xylitol

Americans love chocolate. In fact, millions of us are admitted "chocoholics." U.S. chocolate consumption is around 3.3 billion pounds per year, according to the National Confectioners Association. That 's nearly 12 pounds for every man, woman and child in the nation.

But for more than 21 million Americans with diabetes, forbidden treats - such as luscious dark chocolate truffles - are not part of a healthy diet. Many of us believe that sinfully sweet indulgences must be unhealthy, especially for diabetics. Or are they?

The good news is that recent clinical studies show some types of chocolates actually have significant health benefits. Dark chocolates, particularly those made with minimal processing, are high in flavonoids, which are plant compounds with potent antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are known to gobble up free radicals - the killer compounds that harm cell membranes, damage the heart, attack DNA, cause aging, and make heart attacks and cancer far more likely.

It may surprise you to know that dark chocolate actually has more antioxidants per gram than red wine, green tea, peanuts, cranberries, apples, and many other fruits and vegetables that also are rich in antioxidants.

One independent study led by Claudio Ferri and researchers at the University of L'Aquila in Italy found that consuming dark chocolate not only lowers blood pressure and cholesterol as some prior studies suggest, but also improves the body 's processing of sugar - and in theory, guards against diabetes. Jeffrey B. Blumberg of Tufts University, who collaborated on the study, says "the new finding suggests that specific flavonoids have beneficial effects on several measures of health."

Dark chocolate contains more flavonoids and less saturated fat than milk chocolate. Cocoa powder and baking chocolate contain even more flavonoids than dark chocolate, while white chocolate has none. The flavonoids in chocolate, by the way, are called flavanols.

Ferri and his colleagues included dark chocolate bars in the diets of 10 volunteers with high blood pressure, and gave 10 others white chocolate bars with no flavanols. The subjects weren't obese, and none gained a significant amount of weight during the five-week study. The volunteers who consumed dark chocolate bars reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, while those given white chocolate experienced no change.

In addition, the dark chocolate group demonstrated accelerated metabolism of blood sugar (glucose), a process that involves the hormone insulin. Impaired insulin function can lead to diabetes. Dark chocolate also lowered cholesterol in hypertensive patients, the researchers reported.

Additional benefits associated with dark chocolate in other studies include improved flexibility of the arteries, which can contribute to lower blood pressure, and reduced stickiness of clot-forming blood platelets, which may reduce the risk of strokes and other problems.

Another study, at the University Hospital of Cologne, Germany, tested the effects of dark chocolate vs. white chocolate on artery hardening and heart disease in smokers. The study 's authors concluded that "...only a small daily treat of dark chocolate may substantially increase the amount of antioxidant intake and beneficially affect vascular health."

Another study done at the University Hospital of Cologne and published in the July 2007 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) concluded that consumption of small amounts of dark chocolate was "associated with a lowering of blood pressure, without weight gain or other adverse effects."

"Chocolate is a very remarkable substance with enormously beneficial health properties," says Keith Scott-Mumby, MD, PhD, an internationally recognized expert in diet and nutrition who formulated The Doctor 's Chocolate. The French Paradox and the Health Benefits of Red Wine

November 17, 1991. What was so special about this day then? Well, it was the day that the TV documentary program, “60 minutes” aired its program called “The French Paradox”.

This was the day that the world first learned of the health benefits of red wine. And to say that the program was watched is an understatement.

Within weeks of the program airing, sales of red wine jumped through the roof, and national sales for the following year rose a staggering 39%.

America had discovered what the French had known all along, that red wine in moderation everyday can help in the fight against heart disease. And this was the French paradox. The sedentary life styles of most of the French people coupled with their high fat diets, should ideally have led them to suffer from heart attacks and indeed France should have had a higher heart attack rate.

But the truth was that this just wasn’t the case. And the most likely culprit for such a low incidence rate of heart attacks was most likely the daily – moderate – consumption of red wines. Since at least one glass of wine is taken with just about every meal, there is a very real chance that the French paradox is true.

Don’t rush out and buy the nearest bottle of red wine though. Too much of anything is bad for you and the same holds true for red wines. Moderation is the key here, and unfortunately probably one of the most difficult things to practice when hanging around wine.

Moderation however, also tends to depend on where you’re living. In the America for instance, moderation for a woman is hailed as one glass for women, and one to two glasses for men. And maybe less if you’re planning on driving. In Europe and the United Kingdom however, moderation has a different meaning, with between two to three glasses of wine for a woman, and three to four glasses for a man.

The reasons for the French paradox to work, go along the lines that it can help blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It’s also been known to fight heart disease and certain types of cancer. Not everyone accepts that red wine in moderation every day has health benefits, and if you’re in doubt you should certainly consult your doctor, but other than that it surely can’t hurt too much, right?

Red wines have a number of different antioxidants in them that help towards preventing disease and protecting you against adverse ill-health conditions. So maybe just like an apple a day will keep the doctor away, a glass of red wine a day will also help protect you.

Perhaps the best acne treatment on this planet is water. Acne begins when your skin cells are abused and begin to react abnormally, and water is crucial to your skin's health. In fact, experts say water is crucial to having soft, youthful skin.

When skin cells are deprived of water (dehydration) this leaves them struggling until replenishment arrives. Antioxidant: Bioflavinoids and Raw Foods

Many people have heard that the grocery stores set up their stores in a strategic way, so that you are "forced" to walk by a tempting array of apples, cherries, and all kinds of delicious fruits, before you can get to the canned goods, milk and eggs. It is in this section of the "outer" part of the store, thantioxidant-broccoli-bioflavonoidat we should spend more time. It is interesting to note that even though the USDA's recommendations are far less than the French and Mediterranean diets, only 40% of Americans are eating our daily requirements for fruit. I wonder how many are eating the Mediterranean recommended amount? It is these fruits and vegetables that contain a very powerful antioxidant called bioflavinoids. Bioflainoids, or bioflavonoids are abundantly found in many of the fruits that our bodies crave. In this article I will discuss the benefits you can get from these potent antioxidants, which fruits and vegetables contain bioflavinoids, and the therapeutic applications for bioflainoids.

Not only are bioflavinoids an antioxidant, they also benefit your blood, and your red blood cells, skin, gums, ligaments, and bones, teeth, and the strength of your capillary walls. Now, when we think of capillaries, most of us conclude that it helps with varicose veins, hemorrhoids, and maybe high blood pressure; while bioflavinoids helps with all of these ailments, the strengthening of the capillaries also helps to prevent loss of sight. The health of the capillaries behind the eyes contribute to either good vision, or poor vision. Bioflavinoids feed these capillaries directly.

The benefit that bioflavinoids has on the blood is not to be taken lightly, either. High blood pressure is wide spread in this country, and many are the medicines to fight it. By cleaning the blood, bioflavinoids go far in helping to reduce high blood pressure. It has been said that if your blood is clean, you cannot get sick. If you can stay on a pure diet (raw foods) for 90 days, all your blood cells will be replaced, according to Dr. Paul Bragg. The cells are replaced anyway, but the health of the cells is the factor. Our bodies are made to heal quickly, given the right diet. I think it's interesting that the blood cells are the first to be replaced.

It has also been said, "you are as old as your arteries". With the effect that bioflavinoids have on our arteries, an increase in bioflavinoids will not only go far in preserving our inner well-being, but our skin is also benefited by these bioflavinoids, as the antioxidant aspect of bioflavinoids helps to prevent wrinkling and sagging.

Bioflavinoids are found abundantly in nature: in the pulp and skin of many fruits, including apricots, berries, broccoli, buckwheat, cherries, grapefruit, grapes, lemons, oranges, papaya, pepper, plums, prunes, rose hips, stinging nettle tea, tomatoes. What a delicious way to gain antioxidants and bioflavinoids! I am reminded of what Hippocrates said: "let food be your medicine, and your medicine be food". I couldn't agree more. I never ceased to be amazed at the drug companies' ads on certain drugs, that have a list of side effects so long that I'll be sure to never ask my doctor about that remedy! While everyone must make their own health decisions, I would rather increase my intake of bioflavinoids from raw foods, just because they are a delicious way to good health. One more note here: there are no animal sources of this vital nutrient.

Even though bioflavinoids have no side effects, thankfully, like the doctor drugs do, I will tell you this, um, interesting story. During my fourth pregnancy I consumed a lot of lemon water. I like about half a lemon with a little honey. I drank 2 or 3 glasses of this every day, maybe more. I just loved it. Well, when I went to give birth (I actually stayed home), I gained a centimeter every hour until it was time to push. One small problem: the bag of waters hadn't broken. My midwife said it was very thick. So, we decided to break it open, although we could've waited, we just weren't feeling especially patient at the time....and out came Jordan 10 minutes later. Also, on my third child, she was practically born in her bag! So, beware all you pregnant women who eat healthy, that your bag could be nice 'n thick. But, it could be worse to have a thin bag that breaks too early!! Anyway, you get a few stories to tell when you have nine kids, right?

As far as the therapeutic applications, bioflavinoids have been used to help with allergies, asthma, bleeding gums, broken capillaries, bursitis, colds, depression, dizziness (caused by inner ear), eczema, flu, hemorrhoids, high blood pressure, miscarriages, rheumatic fever, and varicose veins.

To conclude, I believe bioflavinoids are an essential part of human nutrition. I have read otherwise, but I disagree with those statements, as there is plenty of research done that shows the benefits we can gain from this powerful antioxidant. So, don't just eat your veggies, eat your fruit, and enjoy good health.

Antioxidants, Free Radicals, and Sports Nutrition

Contrary to popular opinion, free radicals do not circulate throughout the body. The half-life of most free radicals varies in a range of a few nanoseconds to about 7 seconds duration.

As you know, I am a physician. It's part of my profession to keep abreast of what's happening in medical /health research. Being retired helps, because doctors simply do not generally have the "extra time" to devote to the scientific literature.

But I do. And I love it. I am one of those individuals who really enjoys …brace yourself…chemistry. When I'm done here, you should be excited too, especially if you are interested in sports nutrition and antioxidants, though not necessarily in that order.
Sports nutrition is a vast industry with emphasis on optimizing PERFORMANCE. Off hand, I can think of quite a few categories involving sports nutrition:

* Sports nutrition and supplements for athletes,

* Sports nutrition and athletic performance,

* Sports nutrition and body building,

* Sports nutrition and endurance training,

* Sports nutrition and special diets in a variety of sports,

* Sports nutrition and strength training,

* Sports nutrition for running, jogging, walking, skiing, swimming

* There's even Rocky Mountain sports nutrition

* …the list is endless.

So far, no surprises, huh? Well, here's one for you. Did you know that when you exercise intensively you INCREASE the free radical burden in your body? If you're a serious sports enthusiast, you should know that.

But…the real news is what science is now finding out about that free radical burden of yours. You should pay close attention here.

Suddenly, chemistry gets real personal.

Every one of us has, what may be called, our antioxidant protective capacity. That means our bodies normally utilize antioxidants to protect us against the harmful impact of free radicals.

First of all, what are antioxidants? They are molecular substances which offset free radical damage to the body. Antioxidants, "quench" free radicals (for lack of a better metaphor) neutralizing their damaging effects on the cells of the body.

* Antioxidants are found in foods such as cranberries, green tea and even chocolate.

* Antioxidants are found in vitamins such vitamin C and E.

* Antioxidants are found in carotenoids such as beta-carotene.

* Antioxidants are found in many substances supplied by the body such as glutathione.

* Antioxidants are found in many herbs and enzymes.

The impact of antioxidants is boosted by glyconutrients to offset free radicals in your body…and, as a result of your athletic exertions.

Antioxidant capacity must be provided in your sports nutrition regimen or you could be "robbing Peter to pay Paul" with your workouts. As you will see, without a glyconutritional presence in your sports nutrition, the healthful gains made by your physical workouts will be offset by your own free radical burden.

Free radicals, sports and sports nutrition

Free radicals are those chemical species which contain one or more unpaired electrons, capable of independent existence. They form in the body due to a variety of reasons as offshoots of cellular activity or as products introduced to the body from the outside.

As an analogy, think of running a car engine as the cellular production and the car emissions a free radical production. The engine produces products which cannot stay inside the car without further damage. They simply must be neutralized and expelled.

Free radicals form and cause damage by reacting with many substances in your body. It is estimated that upwards of 200,000 free radical attacks occur in our bodies daily.

When free radical damage is done, the body can remove the compounds formed by its cellular repair system. However, if the body cannot handle the free radicals (with antioxidants for example), nor remove the compounds, then disease can be the result.

Contrary to popular opinion, free radicals do not circulate throughout the body. The half-life of most free radicals varies in a range of a few nanoseconds to about 7 seconds duration. That means they will react within the "neighborhood" (a few Angstroms or microns near where the increase in free radicals occurred) …organs, connective tissue, circulatory or nerve tissue, bone or lymphatic material are all candidates for free radical attack.

Wherever they form, they will damage the surrounding areas, unless prevented by the body…So the body does NOT have the luxury of just filtering away any circulatory fluids to find the free radicals. The body's defense systems must be…well…fairly omnipresent to neutralize the effects of free radicals. The antioxidant protective system must be healthy.

Since they are highly reactive substances, they react with all sorts of cell elements readily. But, when they do react with your body cells, they can damage the cells and even kill them. Often, the damage from free radicals can CHANGE the cellular structure enough to cause DISEASE such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and a host of others.

The type of disease that occurs is dependent upon which of the free radical defenses in the body weren't functioning properly and where the free radical attacks occur.

The body has pretty sophisticated antioxidant defense systems. But, the body CAN get overwhelmed in its antioxidant protections against such free radicals…

Indeed, unless antioxidant enhanced sports nutrition (with glyconutrients) are used to offset the increased free radical burden, the BODY will suffer as a result of intensive sports training, stress, and competition.

Glyconutrients VITAL to sports nutrition …

Studies comparing marathon runners who did and did not take glyconutritional sports nutrition supplements were undertaken. The results were reported by the Proceedings of the Fisher Institute For Medical Research (August 2003, vol.3, no.1). The results "demonstrated strikingly different patterns." Antioxidant protection appeared to be powerfully enhanced against free radicals with glyconutritional supplementation. Thus, the body was protected for several days after the marathon run.

However, when glyconutritional sports nutrition was NOT used, the damaging effects of the free radical burden appeared to remain in the body for about five days. Thus, the subject "consistently excreted higher concentrations of free radical byproducts…" as compared to that of the glyconutritional subject. It should be emphasized that the subject studied WAS TAKING other antioxidants, though not glyconutrition. Despite that fact, the above cited results were obtained.

That's another way of saying that when glyconutritional supplements were not used, the free radical burden upon the body was not lifted. Antioxidant protection does appear to be (significantly) strengthened with glyconutritional sports nutrition. Such antioxidant protection appears to be of benefit for athletes overall, including training, stress, competition and dietary issues.

The glyconutrional revolution in sports nutrition and therapy is just beginning. More studies are being done. More results are coming in concerning free radicals and the capacity of the glyconutrients to boost antioxidant affect against free radicals.
