Pandas snack on bamboo, which contains an element that can prevent cancer.

Tea time

The world’s most expensive cup of tea is packed with cancer-fighting elements, but it’s not without a stomach-turning catch — the tea leaves get a boost from panda feces.

Wildlife expert An Yashi is launching the special blend of green tea, which could cost up to $36,000 per pound, Australia’s SBC.com reported.

Yashi, a college lecturer at Sinchuan University, said using panda excrement to fertilize the tea plants has a health-promoting upside because it contains nutrients from one of the bear’s favorite meals — bamboo.

“Pandas have a very poor digestive system and only absorb about 30 percent of everything they eat: that means their excrement is rich in fibers and nutrients,” said Yashi, noting that those nutrients make their way into the tea through the fertilization process.

“Just like green tea, bamboo contains an element that can prevent cancer — and enhance green tea’s anti-cancer effects — if it is used as fertilizer for the tea.”

Yashi, who collects the dung at a panda breeding center in southern China, said he hopes the tea will snag him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records once it’s released.

But he’s not the first to use feces to fertilize tea plants. Kopi Luwak, the world’s most expensive coffee, is made from droppings of the Indonesian civet cat.

A tablet taken twice daily, Cantavita neutralizes the five major forms of health-damaging free radicals that have been linked to many serious diseases. Many research studies have concluded that elimination of free radicals modulates and maintains healthy cells, tissue and body fluids. Orion Therapeutics believes that Cantavita, a nutraceutical dietary product, will improve general health, wellness and energy levels.

Brunswick Laboratories of Southborough, Massachusetts and Knight Scientific Limited in Plymouth, England have independently verified Cantavita’s industry-leading antioxidant test scores. Manufacturing is done in a current Good Manufacturing Procedures compliant facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

“Cantavita is a breakthrough product among dietary supplements,” explained Frederick A. Valeriote, Ph.D., chief scientific officer of Orion Therapeutics as well as CEO of 21st Century Therapeutics, a biomedical research firm in Ferndale, Michigan. “Studies show antioxidants are most effective when continuously present in the body,” he said. Cantavita’s time-release formulation maintains a healthy level of antioxidants, providing users with around-the-clock protection.”

“Free radicals are continuously challenging your body,” Valeriote noted. “Cantavita’s unique time-release properties provide an ongoing defense against them.”

“At present Cantavita is not targeted to help any particular disease, but we are discussing clinical trials for cancer with medical oncologists in several countries,” he said.

Cantavita was developed following a six-year research study and the awarding of a U.S. patent in 2009. It’s tablet form and two-per-day regimen makes it convenient, tasteless and low-cost. A single dose costs less than a cup of coffee.

Available from www.cantavita.com, anyone interested can subscribe to Cantavita’s email newsletter from the home page.

Nutritional Supplements Can Deliver Many Antioxidants

By Better Health Research News Desk

You probably know antioxidants are good for your well-being. If you've looked for foods and nutritional supplements that contain them and had trouble finding any, you're not alone. It can be tough to track them down, much less to know what they are.

Basically, an antioxidant is any compound that prevents oxidative damage in your body, typically by absorbing highly charged ions called free radicals.

Here are some of the most important, antioxidant-delivering vitamins and nutrients to look for in the herbal supplements and multivitamins you buy:

- Vitamin C: This compound is important for boosting immunity and helping your cells grow and divide. What you may not know, though, is that it is also a powerful antioxidant. Both the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) recommend consuming plenty of it each day.

- Vitamin E: Found in nuts, sunflower oil, wheat germ, spinach and other kinds of produce, vitamin E can help prevent oxidative damage, the ODS states.

- Quercetin: This is a compound that gives certain fruits and vegetables their color. It can also be found in dietary supplements.

- Selenium: This element is an antioxidant, too. Most vitamin supplements contain some selenium.

Coffee vs. Tea: Which Is Healthier?

Q: I wanted to know if coffee or tea is better for you?

A: For this question, we turned to Chris Kilham, Medicine Hunter. Here’s what he had to say.

For centuries, coffee has been praised for its invigorating properties. And it is truly healthy for you. Coffee stimulates the flow of blood in the brain and decreases mental fatigue. It rouses the mental faculties.

However, when comparing coffee and tea – and which one is healthier – it all depends.

For the most part, coffee is healthier for you. The majority of people who drink tea, drink it black, and there’s no question that naturally occurring compounds in coffee are exceptionally good for you. And here's why:

Two large cups of coffee, or 300 milligrams of caffeine per day, can improve a negative mood. Drinking coffee appears to reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease – coffee drinkers have about three to six times lower risk of developing the disease compared to non-coffee drinkers. The reduction risk improves as consumption increases from four ounces to 24 ounces per day.

Research into the chemical properties of coffee show that a cup of Joe contains potent, protective antioxidants, which inhibit the rusting of cells in our bodies. Oxidative damage is associated with diabetes, arthritis and cancer, among many other health issues, and antioxidants are helpful in reducing the risk of some diseases and cell life.

Coffee is especially high in one group of antioxidants, flavonoids. These compounds exhibit protective power against cardiovascular disease by reducing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, or the ‘bad’ cholesterol. So, coffee protects against heart attacks and strokes.

It is known that coffee stimulates bowel activity, but it also reduces the risk of digestive disorders – like gallstones and cirrhosis of the liver. More impressively, coffee has a protective effect against colon and rectal cancers.

And coffee is even safe for pregnant women. There is no increased risk of miscarriage as a result of moderate coffee drinking, and there is no known association with delayed fetal growth or increased rates of birth defects.

But if you’re drinking green tea, which is simply tea that hasn’t been fermented, then I would probably have to say that green tea is the healthier drink. It’s rich in flavenols, which are lost when the tea is fermented.

The bottom line: If you’re talking about coffee and black tea, coffee is the healthier choice. If you’re a green tea drinker, green tea is the healthier choice.
