How Long Does Xanax Work?

Xanax or Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine class of psychoactive drugs.

Alprazolam has a fast onset of action and symptomatic relief. 90% of peak benefits are achieved within the first hour of using either preparation for panic disorder, and full peak benefits are achieved in 1.5 and 1.6 hours respectively. Peak benefits achieved for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) may take up to a week. Tolerance does not appear to develop to the anxiolytic effects but may develop to the sedative effects within a couple of days. Withdrawal symptoms or rebound symptoms may occur after ceasing treatment abruptly following a few weeks or longer of steady dosing, and may necessitate a gradual dose reduction.
Alprazolam is the most prescribed, and the most misused benzodiazepine on the U.S. retail market. The potential for abuse is low and is similar to that of other benzodiazepine drugs. Compared to the large number of prescriptions, relatively few individuals increase their dose on their own initiative or engage in drug-seeking behavior.  Alprazolam is classified as a schedule C IV controlled substance by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)......Wikipedia
How Long Does Xanax Work?

It depends on what type of Xanax your are taking. There is the oral xanax, immediate release and there is the extended release. You have to consult your physician for the proper dosage and frequency of taking it.

here are some response from users of Xanax....from source

usually it's rx'd 1 every 8 hours. so, just see how you feel. if this is a new med for you, it can make you sleepy. so , no alcohol or driving under the influence. it's a short acting med. but, when I take .5 mg I can sleep all night with it and it seems to have a calming effect in the day time. take only what you need. have fun. It won't dull your senses or change your personality. it just calms you to where most things don't bother or irritate you as much. in fact, most of my previous irritants became amusing to me, secretly. It's like, what's the big deal and I just smiled about them and went on my merry way. Good luck.

It starts working in about 20 minutes after you take it. Normally it calms down by acting upon the central nervous system and brain chemicals that trigger the negative moods. It cant be said till how much long it works. If you feel that the effect is running off then take another one if your condition gets serious otherwise I do believe it lasts for max 8 hours.

four-to six hours is the span. It doesn't always do as much for some people who take it, doses are too low, but others can be made really sleepy by it. It depends after four hours if you still feel like its having an effect.

Teas provide benefits for drinkers

By Paige Steele

Tea drinking has played a major role in optimal health to those in the East for centuries and has more recently been widely touted in Western media.

The benefits of drinking tea are vast. Ranging from reducing cholesterol to combating cancer, different teas provide different health benefits and it's important to understand which teas provide which benefits.

According to tea enthusiast Brooke Kueser, senior in education, drinking tea is one of the best things a person can do for their bodies and notes that different kinds of teas provide different advantages to one's health. One of the most popular types of tea, and Kueser's favorite, is green tea.

"[Green tea] aids in weight loss, in that it increases metabolism," Kueser said. "It's also good for you because it contains the antioxidants that a person needs to keep a healthy lifestyle."

Kueser recommends drinking several cups of green tea a day, but admits that one works just fine for her.
"I've started drinking green tea this year," said Reagan Domer, senior in management information systems. "I've noticed a decrease in the amount of colds that I've had and would credit the green tea with that."
According to a Dec. 28, 2011 article on teamuse.com called "The Benefits of Tea" by Media Digest, green tea also helps fight allergies, arthritis and its antioxidants can help inhibit an enzyme cancer cells need to grow.

Black tea is another popular kind of tea among Americans. According to the same article, black tea has been shown to lower the risks of heart disease and is thought to be just as beneficial as green tea.
"Black tea is my favorite," Domer said. "It's a good alternative to coffee as it contains the most caffeine of any tea and Caribou Coffee in the Union has a really good one that I like a lot called Hot Cinnamon Spice."

For people who are looking for anti-aging solutions, they need not look further than oolong tea. According to Sept. 1, 2011 article titled "Oolong Tea Benefits" from teabenefits.com, oolong tea also helps with digestive problems, strengthens the immune system and combats tooth and bone decay.

"Lately I've started to drink oolong tea," Kueser said. "I think it tastes better than green tea and still has a lot of good qualities about it. Plus, tooth health is very important to me."

A tea that has become more popular recently is red tea, commonly known as rooibos tea. This special tea is only found in a bush in South Africa and is thought to have just as many health benefits and cancer-fighting qualities as green tea.

"I first started drinking rooibos tea when I studied abroad in South Africa my sophomore year," said Beth Caldwell, senior in psychology. "I drink a few cups every day and can drink it at night too since it's naturally decaffeinated and I've definitely noticed improvements in my overall health since including it in my diet."
Although each different kind of tea has slightly different health benefits, the effect on overall health remains the same as it is improved with the consumption of tea.

"I just really like the taste of tea and the health benefits are just a perk," Domer said.

The Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea is one of the ancient superfoods gaining new attention recently for its many health-promoting effects. Polyphenols — the class of natural compounds found in green tea as well as in dark berries, vegetables, chocolate and red wine — have powerful effects from cancer prevention to cholesterol balancing.
  • Drinking green tea daily may be preventive in several gastrointestinal cancers (colon, rectal, pancreatic) while improving outcomes in breast and prostate cancer.
  • Studies demonstrate that people who drink green tea regularly have lower bad cholesterol and higher good cholesterol. It is believed that the antioxidant effects may help keep cholesterol from forming plaques in the arteries.
  • The magic combination of caffeine and theanine found in green tea gives you energy while balancing the nervous system to avoid the jitters that can come with coffee. It is also known to increase body temperature by burning fat, a characteristic that has led to some of the green tea diet fads.
The amount of tea people drink in much of the research studies is high – five cups daily according to most of them. A naturopath can provide guidance on additional ways to get a therapeutic dose including green tea extracts standardized for their polyphenol content.
If you’re concerned the caffeine will keep you up at night, here are some strategies:
  • Drink your tea in the morning and finish by 2 p.m. to prevent trouble sleeping.
  • Remember that green tea has 10 mg to 50 mg of caffeine per cup, which is only 15 percent to 30 percent of what you’ll find in a cup of coffee.
  • For a less-caffeinated version, try steeping the green tea for 30 seconds, throw out the water, then use the wet teabag or leaves to make your tea.

New hope for rosacea sufferers

By Dr. Leslie Baumann
Special to The Miami Herald

According to the National Rosacea Society, this common yet poorly understood skin condition affects more than 16 million Americans — and this doesn’t include those with undiagnosed flushing and persistent redness. Rosacea is the subject of much dermatological research, and if you have it, you just may have a reason to celebrate.

Countless studies are looking at the causes of rosacea in an effort to discover new ways to treat it. (You can view the trials that are currently under way at clinicaltrials.gov.) Based on recent findings, rosacea may be more complex that previously believed. There seem to be four distinct types of rosacea — and the new drugs being developed represent new ways to treat these four types.

One especially interesting and important finding is that the skin plays host to many more types of organisms than previously thought. Genetic research has found previously undiscovered bacteria that are unable to grow in culture dishes, and it’s believed these newly discovered organisms play a role in rosacea.

The four types of rosacea include:

•  Flushing: Redness is caused by dilated blood vessels. New drugs are being researched to prevent the dilation.
•  Papular or acne-like rosacea: This type includes skin redness along with overlying red bumps in the center of the face that are often mistaken for acne. These bumps may be caused by organisms on the skin such as demodex (a particular type of mite) or by organisms that have not yet been identified.
•  Broken blood vessels: Visible broken blood vessels are likely caused by years of dilating and constricting. At this time, laser and other light-based treatments are the most effective.
•  Growth on the nose known as rhynophyma: Doctors still have no idea why this occurs and what its relationship is to rosacea, but it is found in people with a history of rosacea. Laser surgery is the treatment of choice.

There has been much progress in rosacea research in recent years, and the identification of these distinct types of rosacea represents a major step forward. If new drugs designed to address these different types of rosacea are effective, that’s great news for the millions of people suffering from this skin condition. In the meantime, if you have any of the rosacea symptoms listed above, see your dermatologist. And stay tuned for more rosacea updates as they are available.

Aminophylline For Cellulite

By:

Cellulite is a physiological change that occurs in the subcutaneous fat layer or better known as "cottage cheese, or an “orange peel appearance”. In fact 90% of all women suffer from cellulite, no matter how large or small they are.

Cellulite has also to do with your body’s connective tissue. The tissue acts as a mesh to keep the fat close to the body. IT works for men but not so well for women. The connective mesh expands letting the fat bulge out.

There are materials that cause the fat cells to shrink or burn by going deep into the skin. They also contain collagen to fill up and make the skin look more smooth and supple. These creams and gels work on the cellular level. They can be applied just as a moisturizing cream about twice a day and produce amazing results. Apart from this, these products contain vitamins and minerals to revitalize and the skin and make it healthier. Generally these creams contain aminophylline. The aminophylline causes the fat cells to shrink by causing them to release lipid fat particles. Also, they may contain caffeine which causes the fat cells to dehydrate. By applying the cellulite products, fat particles are excreted from the cells and are prevented from re-entering, thus dramatically improving the skin's elasticity and reducing the unsightly appearance of cellulite.

A new study looked at whether applying a fat reduction cream containing aminophylline worked. Participants with a high BMI were asked to follow a strict 1200Kcal diet. Additionally some of the participants were told to rub 0.5% aminophylline cream on their waist twice per day.By the 12th week, the participants were examined. All had their waist size reduced but those using the cream lost more fat.

It’s better to look for those products containing anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories. Also extremely effective in fighting cellulite are ingredients such as caffeine, retinal, adiposlim, or aminophylline. Key ingredients bring blood to the surface and improve circulation which plumps up the skin.

In contrast to this, treatments like liposuction (surgery to remove fat) and mesotherapy (injection of drugs into cellulite) are either expensive or may produce only temporary improvement. Liposuction is designed to remove deep fat instead of cellulite which is close to the skin. Liposuction is also considered unsafe.

When you don’t have time for fitness, a self application product is a good option to lose unwanted fat. It also does not involve any surgery or injection into the body. This also allows you to concentrate on the areas which need improvement.

When you’re buying a cream, always start by using the cellulite cream on a small area of your body first and be patient results may take a few weeks. Try out a body slimming cream and be a part of the revolution!

Don't blame whitening agents in toothpaste for those breakouts

By Alexia Elejalde-Ruiz, Tribune Newspapers

A dab of toothpaste has long been a favorite home remedy for clearing up pimples. But could it also cause them?

Despite suspicions from some zit-stricken folks seeking answers on online advice forums, dermatologists say there's no reason to blame toothpaste for acne breakouts.

What toothpaste can cause, however, is irritation or allergic reactions in people with certain sensitivities, resulting in rashy bumps around the mouth or, perhaps, rosacea, a chronic condition of redness and skin sores that might be confused with traditional acne, said Dr. Richard Gallo, chair of the dermatology department at the University of California at San Diego.

"One of the instructions we give to patients with rosacea is to think about the toothpaste you're using," Gallo said.

People can be allergic to just about anything, but toothpaste's mint and cinnamon flavorings, which can include the allergens balsam of Peru, cinnamic aldehyde and peppermint and spearmint flavors, are major culprits in skin reactions, Gallo said.

Trouble is, 95 percent of 153 toothpastes evaluated in a study did not list the specific flavoring ingredients, so people wouldn't know to avoid them, researchers wrote in a study published in September in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology. And it's not easy to find toothpaste without any flavoring.

Other potential allergens that were listed in many of the toothpastes reviewed included sorbitan sesquioleate derivatives, propylene glycol, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium benzoate and benzoic acid, the study found.
People who are worried they are allergic to toothpaste ingredients should see a specialist who can test reactions to the specific ingredients, Gallo said.

But sometimes a skin flare-up has nothing to do with an allergy and is instead irritation.

Sodium lauryl sulfate, a detergent responsible for the foaming properties of toothpaste, is a common irritant that can aggravate the skin around the mouth just as might happen when you eat citrus or spicy foods, said Dr. Andrew Scheman, a dermatologist at the North Shore Center for Medical Aesthetics in Northbrook, Ill., who specializes in contact allergies and was the lead author on the toothpaste study.

Some dermatologists have implicated fluoride as an irritant causing perioral dermatitis, a rash of tiny red bumps around the mouth usually brought on by topical steroids. But few studies have proved the link, and the claims remain "unsubstantiated," Gallo said.

As for whitening toothpastes, Scheman said that if they cause irritant or allergic reactions, it's likely because of something else in the toothpaste, not the whitening agents.

The End of Illness by David B. Agus

Can we live robustly until our last breath? Do we need to suffer from weakening conditions and disease? Can we really increase the vibrant times in our lives? In The End of Illness, David B. Agus, MD, among the many world’s leading cancer doctors, researchers, and technology innovators, tackles these basic questions, challenging long-held wisdoms and taking apart misperceptions about what “health” means. By using a blend of storytelling, landmark research, and provocative ideas on health, Dr. Agus provides an eye-opening concept of the human body as well as the ways it works-and fails-showing us how a new perspective on our individual health will allow each of us to achieve that mostly elusive but now reachable goal of a lengthy, healthy existence.

This indispensable book isn't just a manifesto-a call for revising the way we ponder health-it’s also filled with sensible but impossible-to-ignore recommendations, including:

• How consuming multivitamins and supplements could significantly raise our threat for cancer in time.

• Why sitting down most of the day, regardless of a strenuous early morning workout, can be as unhealthy as or more serious than cigarette smoking.

• How sneaky supplies of daily inflammation-from high heels towards common cold-can lead to a fatal cardiac arrest, as well as deprive us of our peace of mind.

• How three inexpensive medications-aspirin, statins, as well as an annual flu vaccine-can substantially alter the course of our wellbeing for the better.

• How having cutting corners to health via blending vegetables and fruit, and sometimes even by buying what we think is “fresh,” might be shortchanging our wellbeing.

• The one most important thing we could do today to preserve our health and happiness that costs practically nothing.

The End of Illness may be a daring call for all of us to become our very own personal health advocates, and a significant departure from orthodox reasoning. It is a seminal work that promises to transform how we live.

How To Help Your Skin Fend Off The Harshness Of Winter

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chilly temps and dry heat can do a number on your skin. As CBS 2′s Mary Kay Kleist reports, there are simple ways to make sure winter doesn’t make you look old.
In winter, low humidity outdoors combined with dry indoor heat robs skin of moisture.
“The important things to think about doing with your daily routine during the winter time is to repair, replenish, and protect. The skin barrier, when it stays intact, helps prevent dehydration and dryness of the skin,” says Jill Weinstein, a dermatologist with the Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group.
Dr. Weinstein suggests using creamier makeup and moisturizers.  Go for products with sunscreen.  UV-A rays are still strong in the winter. Instead of licking your lips, swipe them with an oil-based lip balm.  Eat foods loaded with vitamins and antioxidants to help your skin.
Trade the long, hot bath  for a short, warm shower. Rehydrate overnight by keeping a humidifier in the bedroom.
Here is the list of skin-boosting foods:
*Salmon – a great source of niacin, which is a B vitamin that can keep skin cells healthy.  Selenium in salmon is an antioxidant that will help protect your skin from sun damage.
*Avocados — this fruit is loaded with essential oils and B-complex vitamins that nourish your skin, inside and out.
*Mangoes — loaded with vitamin A.  This helps to repair skin cells.  If you don’t get enough vitamin A, the result will be a dry, flaky complexion.
*Almonds — they carry vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that can help in fighting skin-aging free radicals.
*Cottage cheese — the selenium and vitamin E in the cottage cheese gives us a powerful free radical-fighting antioxidant duo.
*Soybeans — these are protein-rich to help the skin stay firm.
*Mushrooms — rich in riboflavin, which is a B vitamin that helps with tissue maintenance and repair.
*Sweet potatoes – these are rich in beta-carotene.  Your body will convert this to vitamin A, which helps to shed dead skin cells.
*Papaya — this fruit is high in vitamin C.  Vitamin C is one of the best antioxidants for protecting skin from damage that leads to wrinkles.
*Flaxseed oil — omega 3′s are good for your skin.  Flaxseed oil is one of the best sources.
One last tip: Cutting back on refined sugar can do wonders for your skin.  Refined sugars cause an inflammatory reaction in the body that can add years to your face.
