Antioxidants and Heart Disease in Women - The Real Truth

As I have pointed out in the past, the media seems to love to distort the truth about the benefits of nutritional supplements. The media recently jumped on one of the worst studies on antioxidants done to date. Their claim, which was reported in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine was that women gained no benefit from the supplementation of antioxidants like vitamin C and E. Turns out, that was a clear distortion of the findings of the study.

In a blog I did last week I showed that the researchers did not look at the lifestyles of the study subjects which distorts the data. Today, I found out more dishonesty about the study which sickened me. Turns out that they included the data on the benefits of antioxidants from women who DID NOT TAKE the supplements. They showed no benefits to supplementation of vitamins C and E. NO KIDDING! How can any self-respecting journal publish something like that?

Back to the study. What was revealed yet not reported by the media is that those women who actually took the supplements showed a clear benefit and reduction of cardiovascular disease. What did the media report? That there was no benefit despite the evidence that there was one. How dishonest is this? Antioxidants ARE beneficial.

There are countless human studies that clearly show the benefits of taking antioxidant supplements. Why we have this bias against supplements is undoubtedly because certain pharmaceutical interests would prefer you not to prevent disease but let them treat one once you get sick. No other logical explanation exists.

We often read or hear news reports about antioxidants and how they can improve our health, yet we rarely hear about the role they play in the pleasure we obtain from sex and intimacy.

To understand antioxidants and the ways they can enhance genital health, we first need to understand the role that free radicals play in damaging our cells. In essence, free radicals are the toxic byproducts of our metabolism. Using several enzyme-based systems, our body does its best to combat free radicals. When our body's defenses fail, though, free radicals cause individual cells to become damaged or die. In other words, our cells become oxidized, much in the same way that rust forms on iron when it is exposed to air and water.

Antioxidants help to combat free radical damage by shoring up the body's enzyme-based systems. Vitamins C and E are popular antioxidants, as are the polyphenols found in plants and in certain foods and beverages, such as cocoa, red wine, green tea, and ginseng.

Antioxidants can also improve sexual pleasure and intimacy. Women who are perimenopausal, menopausal, or post-menopausal - along with women who use oral contraceptives - can experience genital oxidative stress, which can result in vaginal dryness and a lack of sexual desire. In a sense, antioxidants are an aphrodisiac, in that they preserve the nitric oxide needed to dilate blood vessels in genital tissues, which in turn causes sexual arousal.

Eating or drinking foods and beverages with antioxidant properties is sure to improve your overall feeling of well-being, but antioxidants delivered in the form of a lubricant to sensitive genital skin can have a positive impact on sexual pleasure and intimacy. When organic antioxidants penetrate the skin, they energize nerve endings.

Genital skin care should be an ongoing priority. When looking for an antioxidant to promote genital health, it is important to find one that is water-free and non-oily. The What and Why Of Antioxidants

More than likely you have heard the term "antioxidant" by now. However, do you know what it is, why you need it or how you get it? Probably not. So, herein what you need to know about antioxidants will be explained.

The first thing that you need to know about in order to understand antioxidants is the process of oxidation. This is a fundamental and necessary biomechanical reaction. Not all forms of this process are helpful though. There are some that forms that happen at the wrong time and are thus disastrous to your health. However, antioxidants can be a big help in helping positive oxidation to occur so that you will have sustained, good health.

Antioxidants also play a key role in keeping the proteins in your cell membranes from being damaged. These proteins are large, complex and specialized molecules. They control the functions of important cell membranes, which are the basic defense system that lets nutrients in, sends waste products out and prevents entry of toxic and viral invaders. As such, they are actually responsible for immune responses. However, oxidation interferes with this process by splitting up the molecules and thus destroying it. Fatty acids can also be destroyed in this way.

It is important to understand that you can also come into contact with the oxidation process outside of your body. Sources for this include exposure to radiation, air pollution, synthetic hormones in food, pesticides, over-the-counter and prescription drugs and food additives. Of course, some of these things are things that you cannot easily avoid. This is why it is important to make sure that your body has plenty of antioxidants, which enable good oxidation to take place.

You can find antioxidants in really green, fast growing plants. This is because sunlight, which is a high-energy source, drives the photosynthesis process. In effect, photosynthesis is the opposite of oxidation. So, plants contain a large supply of antioxidants so that they can be protected from the dangers that sunlight can cause. It is these antioxidants that you will want to consume.

Some of the other great places wherein you can find antioxidants include immature barley and wheat grasses. Zinc also has a lot of antioxidant power, which is why it is used so much during the cold and flu season.

It is also a good idea to avoid partially hydrogenated foods whenever possible. This can be found in processed foods, air pollution and medications. A great way in which to counteract this is by drinking green tea, which has a lot of antioxidant power.

Furthermore, if all else fails, you can take specific vitamins so that you get more antioxidants. One of the best ones that I have found is Shaklee's Glucose Regulation Complex. This "food supplement," as Shaklee prefers to call their vitamins, contains both Zinc and antioxidants. As an added benefit, this is a good choice for diabetics who would like to get off of their glucose products. However, you should contact your doctor before starting it.

The New Science of Antioxidant Synergy

Since the initial discovery of antioxidants, science continues to move forward with new developments and new understanding into how these important molecules work to protect the body from oxidative stress and even prevent the progression of certain disease processes. New scientific developments also show that different antioxidants can actually positively synergize with each other or in some cases cancel each other out. Laboratory methods of measuring these synergies have become the buzz in the research world and amongst informed authors as the only viable method of comparing apples to apples, or at least antioxidants to antioxidants.

Effective laboratory tests are also essential in the study of antioxidants as well as antioxidant supplements because many manufacturing practices expose antioxidants to heat and oxygen and thus render them useless in the final product.

The first laboratory tests to measure the potential of an antioxidant was developed in 1993 and called the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity test, or ORAC. Known as a chemical assay, this test provided an efficient means of measuring the effective amount of water-soluble antioxidants in a sample. However it did not test fat-soluble antioxidants and could not test the synergy of antioxidants when combined with each other. Because this assay is also based on fluorescence, a sample could provide a misleading reading if it contained other compounds that were fluorescent but were not antioxidants.

A newer assay known as ORACo was designed to add the ability to test fat-soluble antioxidants, allow for the testing of synergistic combinations of antioxidants and minimize the possibility of false positives that limited the effectiveness of the older technology.

These types of tests are known as in vitro studies. This means the tests are not done inside of a life form. To maximize the effectiveness of any antioxidant, so-called in vivo studies are performed on the body to measure the delivery of the antioxidants to the blood serum after the antioxidant has been ingested. Such testing is of extraordinary importance because antioxidants are ineffective unless they make it into the areas of the body they're intended to go.

Any study-data on antioxidants that does not include both in vitro and in vivo verification that the antioxidant supplements are effective and being delivered to the blood serum is inherently flawed and untrustworthy.

Any antioxidant supplement should therefore meet the following criteria.

  1. The antioxidants in the supplement should come from natural food sources and not inexact, synthetic counterparts.
  2. The supplement should be manufactured against an in vitro chemical assay, publishing the ORACo value per standardized serving, to show the antioxidant effectiveness of both water and fat-soluble antioxidants in the supplement.
  3. The supplement should also be measured in vivo and verified by independent laboratory analysis to demonstrate that the antioxidants are actually being delivered to the blood serum where they can be used by the body.

Any product that meets these criteria can be trusted to effectively deliver the benefits of antioxidants in the manner we would expect to receive them from fresh fruits and vegetables being eaten directly off the vine from a living plant.

As most antioxidant supplements do not meet any of the above criteria, care should be taken to select a supplement that meets these basic quality standards.

Peanuts Aren't Just Snackfood- They Boost Antioxidants!

When you think of getting high amounts of antioxidants, you may think of eating pomegranates, blueberries, blackberries or strawberries, but a new study found that having a handful of peanuts can give you an antioxidant boost.

A team of researchers at the University of Florida tested a dozen different selections of peanuts and found that not only are peanuts rich in protein and monounsaturated fats (good fats), but they also contain as many antioxidants as strawberries, and are higher in antioxidants than apples, beets and carrots. Pomegranate remains the highest antioxidant fruit.

Antioxidants are naturally occurring chemicals in plant food that protect the body against free radicals, which can cause heart disease and cancer.

Peanuts are high in polyphenol antioxidants, which help to combat oxidative stress and are particularly high in a certain type of polyphenol, called p-Coumaric acid. P-Coumaric acid is a crystalline solid that can be found in a wide variety of edible plants such as carrots, garlic and tomatoes, as well as peanuts, and is rumored to reduce the risk of stomach cancer.

Peanuts are also an excellent source of vitamin E, niacin, folate and manganese.

The study was published in the Food Chemistry journal, a journal that publishes peer–reviewed research papers dealing with a wide range of subjects which are essential to the food scientist and technologist.

The researchers were surprised that peanuts were as rich in antioxidants as strawberries and other types of high level fruits and are thinking that it may be possible to breed peanuts that are specifically high in antioxidants.

The team also found that roasting peanuts may increase the level of acid found in the nuts, which increases the antioxidant level up to twenty-two percent.

Scientists and alternative medicine experts have had much to say on this study and many agree that additional research into the health properties of peanuts may be warranted.

Experts, however, continue to recommend getting daily doses of antioxidants from fruits and vegetables. While peanuts are an excellent source of various micronutrients, they do tend to be high in salt. And when consumed to excess, peanuts can add a high-calorie anchor to one's diet. However, by consuming peanuts in moderation, individuals may be able to benefit from the consumption of peanuts.

To get the benefits without the negatives, a good recommendation may be to obtain an organic, salt-free brand of peanuts and peanut butter for the healthiest dose of peanut related antioxidants.

Antioxidants And Cancer Prevention - Fact Sheet

Just what are antioxidants and can they do anything to help prevent or fight cancer?

Information from the National Cancer Institute describe antioxidants as substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radicals may lead to cancer. Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals and may prevent some of the damage free radicals otherwise might cause. Examples of antioxidants include beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamins C, E, and A, and other substances.

Can antioxidants prevent cancer?

Considerable laboratory evidence indicates that antioxidants may slow or even prevent the development of cancer. However, information from recent clinical trials is less that clear.

Five large-scale clinical trials published in the 1990s reached differing conclusions about the effect of antioxidants on cancer. The studies examined the effect of antioxidants on cancer in different groups. A study published in 1993 showed a combination of beta-carotene, vitamin E, and selenium significantly reduced incidence of both gastric cancer and cancer overall.

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals as the natural by-product of normal cell processes. Free radicals are molecules with incomplete electron shells which make then more chemically reactive than those with complete electron shells. Exposure to various environmental factors, including tobacco smoke and radiation, can also lead to free radical formation. (We pick up a lot of radiation from the sun, enough to burn our skin). In humans the most frequent form of free radicals is oxygen.

When an oxygen molecule becomes electrically charged of "radicalized" it tries to steal electrons from other molecules, causing damage to the DNA and other molecules. Over time, such damage may become irreversible and lead to disease including cancer. Antioxidants are often described as "mopping up" free radicals, meaning they neutralize the electrical charge and prevent the free radicals from taking electrons from other molecules.

Antioxidants used to be abundant in fruits and vegetables and nuts and grains. Due to our soils being nutritionally depleted the amount of antioxidants available in our food is now less that previously. It is recommended that we supplement our diet with good nutritional products.

Understanding Acai’s Antioxidants

Here’s a quote I hear a lot from new Acai fans: “Acai has the richest Antioxidant of any food in the world.”

Yes, you can truthfully say that, it is a quote by Dr. Strauss, who was the first person to run an ORAC evaluation on Acai berries. However, do people really understand what this means?

It’s not really referring to the ORAC score at all, but the high number of Antioxidant Compounds in Acai, which to me is far more impressive.

Most people simply think that relative to other fruits, an Acai berry ranks somewhere around 1,027, while a blueberry, for instance, ranks about 92. Over ten times as much.

Although those are the ORAC designations for fresh Acai and fresh low bush blueberries, this is way too simplistic of a way to think about antioxidants, and frankly some poor eating decisions are likely to be made if you continue to see it that simplistically.

First of all, the 1,027 is a number that represents micromoles (atomic measurements) of Trolox Equivalents per gram of any one Antioxidant compound found inside Acai. In one compound, not separate compounds all stacked up on top of each other.

Trolox is the major Antioxidant inside Vitamin E. People used to take Vitamin for its antioxidant power, but unfortunately what works in a test tube doesn’t work the same way in our bodies, so Trolox is no longer thought of as one of the best antioxidants for our bodies anymore.

However, scientists still measure the Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC value) in micromoles of Trolox’s effectiveness in a lab.

That being said, there have so far been at least 16 Antioxidant compounds discovered in Acai. With many unidentified compounds left to go, there may be more to add to that list.

The most potent Antioxidant compound in the Acai berry is called Anthocyanin, which is the reason you’ve heard that drinking red wine is good for you… Red grapes were the previous best available fruit for Anthocyanins, but now Acai beats them by 33 times!

It’s just the Anthocyanins that are getting measured with the ORAC assay and reported at 1,027 micromoles of TE per gram. The 18 other compounds don’t beat the 1,027 score individually, but if you add them all up they’d easily dwarf the Anthocyanin score!

The number of different compounds in other fruits is usually between 1 and 3. Acai is so far out ahead of the pack in this area too that I simply can’t believe that I haven’t read in anyone’s sales literature about it… To me it is a primary selling point!

Why?

Think about it this way… The USDA recommends 5 fruits a day, right? The average fruit has 1-3 Antioxidant compounds in them, and that’s what’s making them so healthful.

So, the average of 1 & 3 is two, and two times 5 fruits a day equals 15.

It’s fair to say that, the USDA recommends you eat 15 Antioxidant Compounds a day… And Acai has sixteen compounds all in that one little berry! (At the least!)

Actually, that’s not a very fair comparison for Acai, because the 1-3 antioxidant compounds in the 5 random fruits will very likely overlap, and worse case scenario you’re only getting 2 or 3 Antioxidant compounds from your five daily fruits.

The final nail in the coffin of the “multiple fruits are necessary” line of thinking for me was hearing, again from Dr. Schauss, that there is at least one Amazon tribe that eats nothing but Acai. Complete “Acaitarians.” (Yes I made that word up.)

So for those who think that getting five different fruits a day is essential because of the different types of fiber or the other different compounds you get from variety, I say hogwash! People are living on just one fruit, as their only food source, for entire healthy lifetimes.

So what else can it be that we need variation of? It’s obviously the different compounds of Antioxidants. High ORAC scores of each one are great, but a high number of compounds in the first place is what makes Acai revolutionary.

Spices - Mediterranean Diet's Key To Good Health

Over the past decade much has been made of the so-called Mediterranean Diet. Epidemiological evidence shows that people living in Mediterranean countries like France, Greece and Italy have lower incidences of heart disease relative to the USA, UK and more northerly European nations. Various hypotheses have been put forward in an attempt to explain why their diets should afford protection against cardiovascular disease and other degenerative conditions. Two factors that have been given credit for the healthy attributes of this diet are red wine and olive oil. However, until recently one of the most important factors has been overlooked – the consumption in this region of considerable quantities of culinary herbs and spices that are all rich in antioxidants and other important disease-preventing compounds.

The people of the Mediterranean countries, when following their traditional diets, tend to eat less animal-derived saturated fats and more plant-based unsaturated fats (especially those found in olive oil) than those living in other Western countries. In addition they eat less meat and more fish, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and fruit than their less healthy neighbors. These are all important dietary factors that are now being promoted by the medical profession and governments of countries like the USA that have particularly high incidences of heart disease. However, there are other foods that contribute to the favorable health status of those societies that adhere to a Mediterranean-type diet.

Red wine has high levels of important antioxidants like resveratrol that help to reduce the amount of arterial damage caused by a diet high in saturated fat. The fact that some Mediterranean countries boast very high levels of red wine consumption has been put forward by some scientists as the reason for the health promoting properties of the Mediterranean Diet.

Other researchers have pointed out that olive oil is also consumed in large quantities in this region. Although it is well accepted that olive oil and other monounsaturated oils do protect against cardiovascular disease, recent analysis of extra virgin olive oil has shown that it also contains significant quantities of a phytochemical called oleocanthal that is thought to have aspirin-like cardioprotective effects.

Although there are indeed important protective compounds in red wine and olive oil, what is often overlooked is the large quantity and variety of important spices (in this context the term 'spices' includes all culinary herbs) used on a daily basis in the recipes of this region. Garlic, oregano, parsley, rosemary, caraway, coriander, cumin, parsley, sage and thyme are some of the staple herbs and spices that have been used for thousands of years in many traditional Mediterranean dishes.

As a food group, spices have properties that are probably more effective at preventing cancer, cardiovascular and other diseases than red wine or olive oil. One of the reasons is that spices have the highest antioxidant activity of all food types. Five of the 50 top antioxidant foods analyzed in the USA, are spices and of those 50 antioxidant foods an amazing 25% are spices! Interestingly, the spice that heads the list of all these foods is oregano, a spice that originates from the Mediterranean region. Oregano has four times the antioxidant activity of one of the most potent antioxidant fruits, the blueberry. All the other spices that are indigenous to the Mediterranean region like coriander, cumin, capers, rosemary, thyme, tarragon, marjoram, fenugreek, mustard and others also have high levels of anti-oxidant activity. In addition to their cardioprotective effects these spices may help to protect against cancer, Alzheimer's disease and fenugreek, for instance, can help to lower and control blood sugar in Type 2 diabetes.

Therefore, if you want to benefit from the Mediterranean Diet, drink a glass of red wine or red grape juice a day, use olive oil in your salad dressings and cooking; eat wholegrain foods, fruit and vegetables; eat more fish and less meat. But don't forget to add liberal quantities of oregano, thyme, rosemary, parsley, sage, caraway, coriander, cumin and other spices to your food for they are the real disease-fighting stalwarts of the Mediterranean diet.
